Preposterous Reading is a permanently free, ongoing series of Substack essays. Taking Mieke Bal’s notion of “pre-posterous history” as a framework, it thinks about influence in reverse: if a composer actively casts their sensibilities in relation to another non-musical artist, what might the music (the “influenced”; post-) reveal about the art (the influence; pre-)? Drawing across literature, film, dance, and art, Preposterous Reading is an attempt to productively engage the library of interlocutors shaping contemporary music today.

“Like Yahp, Liza Lim believes in possession. She believes in the invisible and in hidden presences, in the ventriloquism of the living by the dead. She too sees lovers twirling in staircases, lizard boys with their fists curled around charred ghost-hunting knives.”
